The Virginia General Assembly has voted to abolish the death penalty, and Governor Northam is expected to sign the bill. Two men remain on Virginia’s death row. Their sentences will be converted to life in prison without parole by the new law. The abolition of the death penalty is also noteworthy because Virginia is the first southern state to abolish the death penalty and Virginia has executed more people than any other state.
